I came to the Yukon in summer 2003 and that is when I was
introduced to running dogs by Frank Turner, the 1995 Yukon Quest Champion. I
have always had a passion for dogs and I loved the idea of combining this
passion with a sport. The first time I went out with a dog team it felt
like: “Yes, this is it.” And this feeling has not diminished at all. I love
to be out there in the wilderness alone with my dogs, feeling the
co-dependence, the trust and the deep bond. My husband, Colin Morrison, and
I have a 16-dog kennel called "Pinocchio's Springs"
Our dogs live in small groups in spacious pens. In this setting the dogs can
roam around as they like and they can socialize, play together and share the
dog
houses.
We have a limited number of dogs. Therefore preventing injuries during the
training period is essential to our team.
In the winter of 2005 I ran my first race, the “30-Mile Carbon Hill Sled Dog
Race“ at the Mt Lorne Community Centre and placed 11th. In the same season I
participated at the
100 miles of the “Silver Sled –Sled Dog Race” in Haines Junction and placed
15th. I like the excitement of racing, the challenge of unknown trails and
terrain and so do the dogs. My main goal is to finish with as many happy and
healthy dogs as possible and to extend my experiences. On top of that I am
proud when my dogs and I can improve our running times.
The Quest 300 is a new challenge I'd like to face with my team, which means
running a longer distance and being out there as a team for a longer period
of time. I also plan to participate in the new local sled dog race "The
Copper Haul Twister", "The Silver Sled" and maybe the "Percy de Wolf"
this season. But the Quest 300 will definitely be my main focus and
highlight of the winter.
Since my husband Colin has a very young team, he plans to participate in
some of the smaller races in the Yukon.
